Why DietSnap says "Not assessed" instead of guessing
A small design decision in our verdict engine that we think matters more than any model upgrade.
When an AI system is unsure, the easiest thing to do is to show something reassuring. In a health app that is the most dangerous thing it can do.
The rule
DietSnap's verdict engine looks at every pair of dish and health goal. If none of those pairs carries a rating — for example because you haven't chosen any goals yet, or the AI couldn't classify a dish — the result is Not assessed with zero confidence. It is never Suggested.
Confidence that goes down, not up
Confidence starts at 90% and rises a little for each extra dish that could be judged, up to 98%. Every dish that couldn't be judged lowers it by ten points. A plate the engine only half understands should look less certain, not more.
Same engine everywhere
The rules are identical in the iPhone app and on DietSnap Web, so a meal gets the same verdict wherever you check it. Logged meals also keep the verdict they were given at the time, so changing your goals later doesn't silently rewrite your history.
